Summoned Zombie in Another World - Chapter 12
Chapter 12 - Experiment, Sword, and Practice
What's the use of this faint connection?
Lin Yan conducted further experiments and soon discovered that the closer his connection with plants became, the more things he could do.
For example, accelerating growth, making fruits ripen quickly, and even changing growth patterns and directions of plants.
But to achieve all of these, there was one prerequisite: energy consumption.
Accelerating growth required energy, and this energy didn't come out of thin air. Lin Yan needed to supply energy as external assistance.
The faster the acceleration, the more energy consumed.
There is no way around it. It's the law of conservation of energy.
During Lin Yan's first attempt, he didn't control it well and almost lost control of himself.
Well, it was more like exhaustion.
He unintentionally exhausted all the energy, leaving himself with no energy, and Lin Yan ended up crashing to the ground like a puppet whose strings had been cut.
After half an hour, Lin Yan replenished a certain amount of energy and regained his ability to move.
This was a significant gain that made Lin Yan understand that energy was indeed his fundamental foundation. If his energy was depleted, he would be done for, becoming a lifeless corpse or a motionless piece of wood.
It's a bit like the time before the zombie outbreak, when everyone cherished their phones like treasures and made sure they never ran out of battery.
Furthermore, energy allowed him to establish connections with plants. The closer and more profound the connection, the more he could do.
To what extent he could achieve this, Lin Yan was not entirely sure. It was impossible to figure out the upper limit in a short period of time.
Because his current energy was not enough, he couldn't support himself to do too many things, and the vegetables in this garden were quite ordinary.
Too ordinary. So all he could do was accelerate their growth and slightly guide them to have a larger size and better taste.
Lin Yan had a general understanding of the characteristics and effects of energy. Next, he focused on the root system within his body.
Lin Yan opened his hand, using his mind to communicate with the root system inside his body. The roots grew and extended, piercing through the skin on his palm and spreading outside.
Then, under Lin Yan's manipulation, the roots freely intertwined and formed various shapes, with the simplest shape being a sword.
Well, it was not the kind of sword that could be swung like in martial arts novels but the type of sword used in Western fencing competitions, which could only thrust.
After all, this sword was formed by interwoven tree roots and didn't have a sharp blade. So, when it came to the sword's edge, it naturally could only thrust.
Lin Yan tried to use it, and although the attack direction became simpler, unexpectedly, the simpler the attack, the harder it was to evade.
The speed at which his sword extended had to be fast, fast enough that the opponent couldn't react. So, he needed to practice more, to the point where the entire process of thrusting and retracting the sword was completed in an instant, making it an effective move.
While practicing the in-and-out movements, three words suddenly flashed through Lin Yan's mind: Wolverine.
It seemed to be someone's code name, and their way of attacking seemed similar to his, extending a weapon from the hand, much like his own style, but also somewhat different.
Lin Yan couldn't exactly pinpoint the differences because he didn't have memories in that regard.
However, thinking of Wolverine led Lin Yan to another name, Spider-Man.
Spider-Man's way of attacking was shooting webs from his palm? Or was it the wrist? He couldn't remember clearly, but it didn't matter; he could try it out himself.
Prepare and then shoot!
The result was that he shot, but it didn't go far; the power was a bit lacking.
He gathered and accumulated power again, then shot.
This time, the shot was successful, but not entirely because after shooting, the tree roots fell at his feet.
So, how far did it shoot and how much damage did it have?
It seemed that this attack method wasn't feasible. At least for now, Lin Yan didn't have the ability to make it effective. So, he could only put it aside for now and reconsider it later.
...
"Do you really not need to eat?"
In the evening, the two sisters who were preparing dinner, Elsa glanced at Lin Yan and asked.
"Thank... you... not... necessary!"
With just four words, it was still a bit of an effort for Lin Yan to say. He felt that he should practice more and strive to be able to speak fluently as soon as possible.
"Are you sure you don't need to? You haven't eaten anything all day."
This guy must be made of iron or steel. He will starve if he doesn't eat a meal.
Since Elsa brought Lin Yan back, it had been almost a whole day, and he hadn't eaten anything, not even a drop of water.
Elsa was indeed a little worried. Could Lin Yan's body handle it? But when she thought that Lin Yan was different from ordinary people, seemingly not a human, perhaps he couldn't eat ordinary things.
Lin Yan shook his head and said, "No need to... worry, I just need to... bask in the... sun!"
"If basking in the sun can make you full, then it's really easy to feed you. Are you really made of wood?"
Aika expressed astonishment, widening her eyes as she stared at Lin Yan.
"Perhaps... probably."
It was hard to say if he was made of wood, but he was definitely connected to plants. Perhaps calling him a plant person would be fitting.
"I'll call you Wood from now on."
"Aika, you shouldn't be so impolite."
Elsa scolded her, telling her not to be so impolite. Aika stuck out her tongue and lowered her head to eat.
"I never asked, do you have a name?"
"Lin... Yan."
"Where do you come from?"
Lin Yan fell silent for a moment, then shook his head. That was difficult to say and explain.
"What are your plans for the future?"
"I want to stay here temporarily... for a while, is that okay?"
Becoming stronger couldn't be achieved overnight. He needed to accumulate energy, study his abilities more deeply, and practice extensively. All of this required time.
Lin Yan felt that Elsa's place was suitable, so he wanted to stay temporarily for a while. Elsa didn't refuse either. After all, Lin Yan didn't need her to cook for him, and he didn't need to sleep either.
Moreover, she was selling vegetables during the day, and there were people at home to help watch over the house. It was a good thing.
"Sure, as long as you don't mind."
"I can help you... with farming!"
Although he didn't need to be fed and housed, Lin Yan felt that he should do something to repay the other person's kindness. Most importantly, helping with farming should be helpful for studying his abilities.
More interaction, more understanding, truth through practice.
Like this, Lin Yan settled down at Elsa's place. During the day, he basked in the sun and did some farming, experimenting with his abilities and establishing a connection with plants. In the evenings, he meditated and practiced in the courtyard, finding time to practice extending a sword from his palm and having the root system weave into vine armor to improve his defense.
